Part 3: Community
We are human beings, and we are part of communities. Make a list of all the communities you belong to which you belong. Include different circles of friends and teammates, family, neighborhood, etc.
At church we pray “I have sinned through my own fault, in what I have done and what I have failed to do.”
Think about your thoughts, actions, and interactions in these communities and as a community.
Have I said or done hurtful or careless things to my family or friends?
Have I neglected to develop or share my talents?
Do I think too much of myself, or not give myself enough credit?
Have I had an opportunity to help someone, and turned the other way? Classmates? Family members? People throughout the world, in my human family?
Have I known that God was leading me to something, and ignored it?
Does my church help people in need? Do I contribute to that effort?
The prayer above continues, “I ask Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the lord our God.” From Mary to the person next to you at mass, you have a community of people praying for you. And you have a community of people counting on your prayer.
God of wisdom and guidance,
Help me see the ways I pull away from you.
Help me let go of my sinfulness and draw near to you.
Help me be a good friend, child, and sibling to the people in my life.
Lead me to confess my sins,
and bring me into your peace.
Amen. |
