Part 1: My lightness and darkness
Take out your journal and find a quiet, comfortable place. Invite God to guide you.
Loving God, You know the lightness and darkness of my heart. As I pray today, help me know my gifts and best qualities. Please help me let go of what keeps me from you. Thank you, God, for your blessings and guidance. Amen.
Begin by thinking of what is best about you. Think about the brightest spots of yourself and write your thoughts. Some guiding questions are here if you need them.
What are my best qualities?
What are my gifts?
What do I like best about myself?
What do my family and friends thank me for?
What have I done to make others happy?
What is the best thing that happened to me lately?
What have I done to show my compassion for other people in the world?
What do I do to honor God for the blessings in my life?
Write out good things about you and take a few minutes to honor your goodness.
Generous God, Thank you for the gift of my life and identity. I am your precious creation, made in your image. As I pray about the things I would rather hide please help me to remember that I am inherently good and on my pilgrim path. Amen.
Now, take some time to think about the shadowy corners of yourself and write your thoughts. Some guiding questions are here if you need them.
What keeps me from God?
What keeps me from better relationships with my family and friends?
What keeps me from acting compassionately for people throughout the world?
Do I ever take for granted the things that others do for me?
Do I have trouble sharing my things or my gifts?
Do I get stubborn and angry when things do not go my way?
Am I impatient with my teachers and family?
Am I impatient with living under the rules of my household, church and/or school?
Do I forget or ignore God's hand in my life?
Am I too proud to ask for help or admit I am wrong?
Do I fail to let people know that I love and appreciate them?
In what way is God calling me to grow and change?
When you finish writing about the things you have pulled from the dark corners of yourself, take a minute to pray. Begin by taking a deep breath.
Merciful God,
You know the darkness and lightness in my heart.
Thank you for loving all of me, all the time.
Help me to grow closer to you.
Give me the courage and strength to stick with it.
Amen.
