Blessing Rite for Catechists or RCIA Companions
"A good teacher is gentle, patient, and tolerant" (1 Tim 2:24-25)

Before classes begin each week or prior to the gathering of the RCIA candidates, teachers or companions can meet briefly to center themselves for their task.  The paschal candle is a fitting symbol of these tasks.  It can be lit each week as the work of sharing the light of Christ is undertaken. A designated leader begins the prayer after lighting the candle.

LEADER: Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God our Creator, from our Lord Jesus Christ, and from the Spirit who continues to teach us all things.
ALL: Grace, mercy, and peace to you.

LEADER: Let us ask God to be with us so that we may teach wit ha love that mirrors the just and compassionate heart of God.
Moment of silent prayer.

READER: A reading from 2 Timothy 1:6-7; 2:11-15, 24-25
I want to remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. God didn't give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

You can depend on this: If we have died with Christ, we will also live with Christ; if we hold out to the end, we will also reign with Christ. If we deny Christ, Christ will deny us. If we are unfaithful, Christ will remain faithful, for Christ can never be unfaithful. Keep reminding people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words, which is of no value and only ruins those who listen. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who doesn't need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

As a servant of Christ, you must not engage in quarrels; instead, be gentle with everyone, a good teacher, patient and tolerant. Be gentle when you correct those who argue with you -- perhaps God will grant them repentance, the grace to recognize the truth.

The Word of the Lord for us and for all who hope in God's love.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

LEADER: Let us pray for God's blessing on us and upon the students or candidates God has entrusted to us. May we be open to the Spirit who continues to teach us all things.
ALL: Amen.

LEADER: May we teach with conviction and respect the mystery of faith coming alive in our heart through the hearts of those God has entrusted to you.
ALL: Amen.

LEADER: May Christ be our light to guide us and our students or candidates to new life in his love.
ALL: Amen.

LEADER: May the Spirit, source of all good gifts, bless you and remain with you now and all the days of your life.
ALL: Amen.

LEADER: Let us engage in our ministry this (day or night) in the peace and presence of the Lord who has risen and is with us still.
ALL: Amen. Thanks be to God.
Exchange sign of peace.
